How Does It Work ?

This software just writes a value into the windows registry. When the Network Adapter Device is enabled, windows searches for the registry value 'NetworkAddress' in the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1- 08002bE10318}\[ID of NIC e.g. 0001]. If a value is present, windows will use it as MAC address, if not, windows will use the hard coded manufacturer provided MAC address. Some Network Adapter drivers have this facility built-in. It can be found in the Advance settings tab in the Network Adapter's Device properties in Windows Device Manager.

How To Change MAC Address

1. Starting MAC address changer will list all available network adapters.
2. Select the adapter you want to change the MAC address. You will get the details of your selection below.
3. In the Information tab, find the Change MAC Address frame. Enter new MAC address in the field and click Change Now! button. You may even click Random MAC Address button to fill up a randomly selected MAC address from the vendor list available.
4. To restore the original MAC address of the network adapter, select the adapter, click Restore Original button in the Change MAC Address frame.
NOTE: This tool cannot change MAC address of Microsoft Network Bridge. Network Bridge will automatically use the original MAC address of the first NIC added into bridge with the first octet of MAC address set to 0x02.

3. AnonyMac (prometteur...)

While not a common occurance, sometimes it's handy to be able to change you MAC address - whether it's simply to test something or to force a router to re-issue you a new IP - and that's where this utility comes into play. AnalogX AnonyMac allows you to quickly see all of your network connections, what MAC is currently assigned to them, and then change them to a completely new one. AnonyMac also decodes the manufacturer information from the MAC so you can see who actually made the NIC, as well as some of the basic IP settings associated with the connection. There is also an ARP viewer, which gives you the ability to see any of the MAC addresses of other computers on your local network along with decoded viewing of their MAC manufacturer.

Help:
This program changes the MAC address of an AirPort Extreme card by modifying the AppleAirPort2.kext kernel extension as described here. The MAC address change will remain set until the kernel extension is updated by an Apple update or the program is run again.

Note:
USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. This software modifies and loads/unloads a kernel extension. There is the possibility something could go wrong which will result in you having to enter specified terminal commands or in a much rarer case have to reinstall the AirPort Extreme kext.

2. MACchanger-GTK

INSTALLATION:

Installation is simple:

Open up your Add/Remove Software utility.

Search for “macchanger” (no quotes).

Select MACchanger-GTK for installation (this will pick up any requirements necessary).

Click Apply to install.

That’s it. You are ready to use MACchanger-GTK.

USAGE:

Using this tool is simple. But you will not find a menu entry for MACchanger-GTK. Instead you have to start it from either the command line (with the command macchanger-gtk) or by hitting <Alt>F2 and then entering macchanger-gtk. Once open you will see a very simple interface (see Figure 1) ready to change your MAC address. To do this follow these steps:
1. Select your Network Interface from the drop down.
2. Click See current MAC (this will display your address in a new window).
3. Click the Known vendor button. If your NIC is detected with enough information you can then change the address to another address of the same manufacturer. If not, your best bet is to go with Random.
4. From the Options drop down select one of the methods for changing your address.
5. Click Change MAC.
That will change the MAC address of your network interface card. Once changed you can then click the Quit button to dismiss the MACchanger-Gtk window.
